The Retaining Ring External Tooth Washer is made of carbon spring steel which is strong and is known for its ability to resist deformation under stress. External snap rings are axially installed in the groove of a shaft with a portion of the ring protruding from the groove that is also called a shoulder and holds an assembly in place.
